Sandhead, Scotland

Sandhead is a small village in the Rhinns of Galloway in the district of Wigtownshire, part of Dumfries and Galloway in South West Scotland. The village is approximately 8 miles south of Stranraer.

The village was originally developed as a strip village with a smithy and a school by 1850, and the bay, now popular with kite surfers and kite boarders, was used for landing lime and later coal.

The village has a Primary School which is situated above the village. A little north of this is Balgreggan Motte which was an early castle along the eastern shore of the Rhins. The castle was used as a lookout point by the Royal Observer Corps during the Second World War and the village itself is located nearby to RAF West Freugh.
